Commissioning a painting

Basic factual information:

  • Commissions of landscapes, still life and abstract paintings are warmly welcomed.  For portraits of people or pets, I have plenty of highly talented artists that I can refer you to.

  • I will work from photographs provided that you have taken the photo or you have the explicit, written permission from an individual that the photograph may be used for a painting.  Due to copyright laws, any photo taken from the internet, a magazine, etc. will not be considered.

  • Prices for commissions are in line with prices of the work available in my studio. For example, a framed 8” x 10” painting retails for $725, a framed 15” x 30” retails for $3400, etc., - this is what you should expect to pay for a commissioned painting.

  • Commission delivery times are dependent on factors such as, size, complexity and/or ordering special materials if needed.  However, the average delivery times for commissions are:  Small works (11 x 14 and smaller) can be completed, dried and framed in approximately 2 to 3 weeks; medium sized paintings, 4 to 5 weeks;  large paintings average 6 to 8 weeks.

The process

  • The first step is simply reaching out to me and discussing what you want.

  • Once we have agreed on the subject, size, colour palette and I have provided the cost and estimated delivery time, a 50% deposit is required to begin the process.

  • Note:  interior designers are strongly encouraged to provide fabric swatches, paint chips and/or wallpaper samples so that the colours in the painting truly complement the palette of your room.

  • A small oil sketch will be done for your review (this will be without details, as it is a rough working copy for the actual painting to be completed). Upon your approval, I will begin the actual commission.

  • You will receive 3 “in progress” images. (beginning stage, mid stage and one just before it’s finished).   Your feedback is important, and part of the process. You are welcome to visit the studio and see the paintings after stages 2 and/ or 3.

  • Once the painting has dried and been framed, the balance of 50% will be due at delivery.
